| Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows Congregation Shaar Hashalom Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows These 12 windows portray many of our Jewish values superimposed over a skyline of the old city of Jerusalem towards which we face during prayer. Sunlight radiating from behind the Ten Commandments, the heart of all Jewish law, brings together the values of our daily lives form dawn to dusk. { Mouse over a window to see a close up }
Center Left & Right topThe two central windows hold the Ten Commandments, The basis for all Jewish Law. Light, created by G-d on the first day of creation radiates from behind the Ten Commandments. Center + 1 Left top The Torah, the basis for our written history, our knowledge of who we are, where we came from. Without knowledge, there is no understanding, without understanding there is no knowledge. Center + 1 Right top Scales of Justice represent The Jewish Law by which we live. "You should seek Justice, - a full stone or weight". Torah law provides balance to our daily lives so that we live in peace and harmony. Center + 2 Left top The Dove with an olive branch for peace witnessed the covenant the G-d made with us after the floods of Noah. The Dove also represents the Soul with in us allowing us to soar to greater heights. This window is dedicated to the seven astronauts of the Space Shuttle Columbia, etched into the sky above the Dove are seven small starts. Center + 2 Right top The Menorah, carved from a solid form, represents Unity with the central candle as the center of Jewish knowledge, the Torah; the six branches represent the other portions of all knowledge, both religious and secular. Center + 3 Left top The Tree of Knowledge rooted in the mountains of Sinai, blossoms forth with Pomegranates, the symbol of the Torah for its 613 seeds, one for each Mitzvah. Center + 3 Right top The Morgan David, the Shield of King David, representing the Jewish people flying above the Western Wall in the old city of Jerusalem. Center +4 Left & Right top The Shaar Hashalom or Gates of Peace welcome all to our congregation. Entwined in the gates are Wine Grapes, the symbol of Blessings and Connection of Man to G-d. Olives the symbol of Peace and Light, Myrtle, the symbol for Marriage, Joy, Peace and Tranquility, and Wheat shafts representing Charity, the leaving in the fields after the harvest for the poor to gather. Center +5 Left & Right top Flanking the windows on the left is Shabbat, the holiest day of the year, represented by the Shabbat candles, Sidur, talit and the blessing on our homes. The full moon, in this window, represents our calendar and life cycle and is countered in the right window with the new moon. On the right, "echad" the Oneness of G-d, the Shema is a call to witness the first commandment, "I am the Lord, Thy G-d." A Shofar calling us to prayer under a new moon, an every recurring, a new beginning. Congregation Shaar Hashalom has established the Lisa Federow Memorial Fund.
