Adult education events include Introduction to Judaism and conversion classes, as well as special topics and guest lecturers. See the calendar for additional upcoming events.
We will begin with the class, Hebrew Jump Start: Learn How To Read Hebrew In Three Hours. This will take place on Sunday morning, from 10 am to 1 pm, on September 6th, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. This class introduces the student to all of the consonants and vowels of the Hebrew language, enabling the student to vocalize the Hebrew text. Then, beginning two weeks later, on September 20th, from 1:30 to 2:30 every Sunday afternoon, but following the congregation's Religious School's calendar, we will learn Biblical Hebrew Grammar, enabling the student to translate the Bible. There will be a cost for this class that will cover the textbook and handouts, and it will require the student to do his or her homework!
Introduction To Judaism
This class meets on Wednesday evenings, from 7:15 to 9:00. First this class gives the students an opportunity to ask any and all questions of the rabbi regarding Judaism or the Jewish community. We will examine Judaism's beliefs regarding Sin, Sacrifice, Atonement, Heaven/Hell/The Afterlife, Devil/Satan, Monotheism, the Messiah, and other topics. We then go through a vocabulary of Jewish life, Holidays and Holy Days, Life Cycle Events, and Judaism's view of the controversial issues of the day. This class is mandatory for anyone interested in conversion to Judaism. There is a cost of $72 a semester, or $144 a year, to cover the cost of all of the handouts used in class.
Line By Line Through The Prophets
This class begins meeting on Sunday, August 30th, and will follow the Religious School's schedule. From 11:15 to 12:15 we are going to be reading the Prophets together, starting with Isaiah, learning and discussing each verse. Although we will be going line by line through the texts, one does not have to have attended previous classes. Come and enjoy!
Open Judaism Forum and Adult Education at Bon Appetit Restaurant.
This is a get together where we meet to discuss the issues of the day, and to provide a place away from the synagogue to let anyone come and ask questions about Judaism and the Jewish Community. There will be a topic for discussion each week. This class will meet at Bon Appetit on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:30, and on the first Thursday of the month, instead of during the day, we will meet from 7:00 to 8:30 at the IHOP on NASA Road 1.
